1- A few words on this holiday season.

This 2009 exhibition period ended. Now comes the time to relax and enjoy the holiday. For some people, these weeks are a time of spiritual retreat, a good family dinner, mailing Christmas cards, a pine tree decorated with white or colored lights, lot of cristal balls and other decorative pieces associated with the season, as nuckcrakers, angels, etc..., where you place your Christmas presents for the adults and toys for children -by Santa Claus-. Also songs in the air as "Gingle Bell" and other "tin tin tin, tin tin tin ,..." Super exciting days and spiritual encounter with God and friends.
For others, are moments of year-end joyousness, lot of food, roasted pork, baked chicken or turkey, "pasteles en hojas'' (meat pastries wrapped up with plantain leaf), "Russian salad", rum, wine, sweet-anise, festive uproar, including popular secular music and dance. Also, children anxiously await for the Three Kings Day (January 6), for their toys.
Whatever be your custom way to end the year, depending on your ethnic background, my most sincere wishes for these holidays.
Several projects are waiting for me in the creative task, for the start of exhibitions of late March or early April 2010.
Meanwhile, you can appreciate and acquire my art in an exhibition at Koko Gallery all November, with opening in the 7th, 2009. 6:30 - 11:00pm.
Also, if you live in the Surroundings of Hogansville, GA, visit Clemens Art and Books, to see a few of my works.

_____________________________________________________________________________

1976 Drawing
1977 Drawing
At the end of my academic studies (1978) in the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, my work underwent a stylistic transition, from social realism to expressionism. Although I developed stylistic changes, the subject was the same: social concerns.
Nowadays, honoring those days of youth (1970´s), with all the economic crisis we live today, work related, could not miss: "Prayer". Prayers with open raised arms to the "Divine Child" (the "Divine Child" is worshiped with particular attention in Colombia), for a better financial luck. Sometimes the crisis is so acute that not even the prayers bring answers, and some people, already exhausted, down and cross their arms (see detail of "Plegaria).
"Destino", a work dedicated to the different directions that youth choose. Some leave school early and work in factories and retail bussiness, to join the consumption system and have fun, or for responsability of family commitments (The one who walks into the factory). Others within the same pattern, see no future in their countries, so pack the bags and migrate to others with greater resources (Woman with luggage). Surprising number of youths involved in street life, a situation which causes serious social crisis in a country (The young man walking to the right with his cap backwards). A few percent of those young people, sacrificing a bit more and continued their studies to become skilled technicians and professionals. The close-up large face is the student who walks into knowledge, the university. The additional detail of the eye that reflects, in a way of brightness, a face with "graduate cap" , is a symbol of his goal.
