Zona Colonial en Santo Domingo - Colonial Area in Santo Domingo

Muchas veces, cuando uno vive en su pais no siente tan fuerte interes en cosas gigantes que se han heredados del pasado. Yo he hablado con mucho peruanos que reconocen no haber ido nunca al Machu Pichu o ir a ver los gigantezcos dibujos sobre la tierra en Nazca. Sin embargo, el Machu Pichu podria estar considerado entre las 15 maravillas del mundo.

Viviendo en la capital dominicana, podria caminar dia por dia las estrechas calles de la zona colonial, y realmente no "estar mirando" la herencia que dejaron aquellos primeros habitantes europeos que edificaron la primera ciudad con la civilizacion del viejo mundo: la Española. Originalmente la Escuela de Artes Plastica se encontraba en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, localizado en la Maximo gomez con Avenida Independencia. Un hermoso legado de la epoca del Dictador. Luego fue trasladada al Palacio de Borgella, este hubicada frente a uno de los lados laterales nada menos que la Primera Catedral de America. Que legado! Me da pena decirlo, pero nunca he entrado en ese lugar, y posiblemente miles de personas tampoco. Lo que si puedo decir es que cada vez que he pasado por ahi, las puertas estan cerradas con unos barrotes de hierro.

A solo uno 3 o 4 bloques se encuentra El Alcazar de Colon, nada menos que la casa donde vivio el hijo de Cristoban Colon. Pudo haber sido la del Mismo Cristobal Colon, pero el no quizo poder de mando y pidio a los reyes catolicos de España que le diera el Vireinado de la isla la Española a su hijo, y asi se hizo. Cuantas veces uno pasa frente a ese edificio, uno sabe lo que es, pero no le enciende el orgullo. Y no por resentimiento por las astrocidades de los españoles, porque eso se produce mas en intelectuales concientes de las consecuencias historicas, sino por dejadez,

La Española, hoy Santo Domingo, como primera ciudad de America, de la que cuando uno vive en otro pais, orgullosamente presume al hablar a personas de otras nacionalidades, diciendo "donde todo comenzo", tienen muchas otras primicias. Una de las mas grandes primicias de Santo Domingo lo es nuestra Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo, -UASD- PRIMADA DE AMERICA. Yo estudie alli. Que orgullo!

Hablando con algunos amigos norteamericanos de confianza, solo para presumir, pues no todos, pero muchas personas, a veces tienden a menospreciar intelectualmente a los inmigratantes que vienen de Hispanoamerica, y mas aun si vienen del Caribe, le suelo decir, "mientras en estas tierras grandes y ricas muchos andaban en "tapa-rabos", ya nosotros teniamos catedral y universidad!!!

Colonial Area in Santo Domingo

Many times, when a person lives in his country it doesn't feel so strong interest in giants things that have been inherited from the past. I have spoken with many Peruvian that they recognize never have gone to Machu Pichu or to see the Nazca's giant drawings in the earth . However, Machu Pichu could be considered among the 15 wonders of the world.

Living in the capital of the Dominican Republic, you could walk day per day the narrow streets of the colonial area, and not be looking at the inheritance that those first European inhabitants built, the first city, the first civilization from the old world: La Española.

Originally, the Fine Arts School was in the Fine Arts Palace, a beautiful building located at the Maximo Gomez Avenue with Independence Avenue. A beautiful legacy from the Dictator time. Then it was transferred to the Palacio Borgella, this located in front of the lateral sides, nothing less than the First Cathedral of America. What a legacy! I feel bad to say it, but I have never walk inside that cathedral, and possibly millions of other people. Well, everytime I walk around the cathedral, the two larges main enter are closed with some iron bars doors.

Only 3 or 4 blocks from the cathedral are The Colon's Fortress (El Alcazar de Colon), nothing less than the house of the son of Cristoban Colon. It could have been the house of Cristóbal Colon, but he do no want the power in La Española, so he requested to the Catholic Spain Kings that gave to his son, and it was made this way. How many times a person walk in front of that building, and knows what it is, but doesn't light him the pride. And no for resentment for the crime of the Spaniards, because that is more popular in intellectual with strong conscience of the historical consequences, but for carelessness,

La Española, today Santo Domingo, as first city of America, the one that when one lives in another country, proudly "shows off" when speaking with people of other nationalities, saying "where everything began", have many other "first". One of those big "first" of Santo Domingo it is it our Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, -UASD - FIRST UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA. I study there. What pride!

Speaking with some close North American friends, in a way to "show off", (no all, but some people, sometimes try to minimize intellectually the immigrants come from Spanish America), I usually tell them, "In La Española, where everything began, while in this big and rich lands many still walked with "cover-tails", we already had cathedral and university!!!
