Museo de Arte Moderno - Modern Art Museum

El Museo de Arte Moderno es nuestra institución mas importante en el arte visual de la República Dominicana. En recientes años se fundo en la segunda ciudad mas importante otro en Santiago de los Caballeros, el Museo León, el que tratare de visitar el año próximo.

Originalmente, el Museo de Arte Moderno se llamo "Galería de Arte Moderno", hasta años anteriores, que se le cambio el nombre a museo. Sin embargo, esta institución, desde sus inicios siempre fue un museo, aunque con una gran acentuación en exposiciones periódicas de los artistas dominicanos, entre las que me siento honrado de haber participado en un par de bienales, una exposición grupal y una individual en la extensión del museo localizada en la parte de atrás, llamada "Paraboloide".

Esa acentuación a "exposiciones periódicas" ha sido criticada por algunos que señalan que el museo "sigue siendo galería", pues de sus tres pisos mas el sótano, solo dedica el cuarto nivel a colecciones permanente. Los dos primeros niveles mas el sótano se dedican a individuales y grupales temporales.

La parte administrativa de la galería o museo nunca ha sido elegida a través de concurso abierto a nivel nacional, sino por simpatía o alineamiento político con el gobierno de turno. Por tal motivo, "cada cuatro años" (periodo de un gobierno), el director de esta galería o museo es cambiada, aun fuese el mismo gobierno que saliera reelecto. Actualmente tenemos una joven directora elegida por el actual gobierno para esa posición. Aunque la comunidad artística con la que me comunique en mi recien visita parece no haber oído de ella en el pasado, me parecio verla muy activa "inaugurando exposiciones periódicas". Le deseo éxito en esa difícil tarea, sea cual sea su currículum.

En la República Dominicana tenemos una cantidad enorme de artistas intelectuales que hoy día disfrutan de gran renombres, por su trabajo y seriedad. Por eso, a veces vemos con recelos que ni siquiera se consideren nombres para dirigir nuestras mas importante institución del arte dominicano. Nombres como Ada Balcacer, Rosa Tavarez, Fernando Ureña Rib, Norberto Santana, Elsa Nuñez, Marianne de Tolentino, Cándido Geron, Manuel Montilla, Rotellini y un monton de otros mas, son candidatos excelente para dirigir nuestra casa nacional de conservación y divulgamiento del arte, pero como "algunos no son políticos", no son opciones para eso. En años anteriores, mi buen amigo de mas de 30 años, el conocido artista Alberto Bass la dirigió excelentemente durante el perido de gobierno de turno de esa época. Pero, Alberto Bass era, desde hacia tiempo, del partido político que regia la nación en los cuatros años de su dirección.

De toda manera, esa es parte de nuestra identidad dominicana. Sea cual sea el que estés sentado en la oficina dirigiendo, hay que apoyarlo en beneficio del arte nacional

Modern Art Museum in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

The Museum of Modern Art it is our institution most important in the Dominican Republic. In recent years was founded other in the second city most important, in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Museum León, tone I will try to visit next year.

The administration of the gallery or museum has never been chosen through national open call for that position, but for sympathy or political alignment with the government in power. For such a reason, every four years" (period of a government), the director of the gallery or museum is changed. At this moment we have a young lady elected Director for the current government for that position. Although the artistic community with which I communicate newly in my visit seems not to have heard of her in the past, I see her as a very active lady "inaugurating many periodic exhibitions." I wish her success in that difficult task, whatever be her background.

In the Dominican Republic we have an enormous quantity of intellectual artists that nowadays enjoy of great fames, for their work and seriousness. For that reason, we sometimes see with mistrust that are not even considered names to direct our most important institution of the art in the Dominican Republic. Name as Ada Balcacer, Rosa Tavarez, Fernando Ureña Rib, Norberto Santana, Elsa Nuñez, Marianne de Tolentino, Cándido Geron, Manuel Montilla, Rotellini and a many other come out after I immigrate to USA, they are excellent candidates to direct our national museum of conservation and spreading of the art, but as "some them are not political", they are not options for that. In previous years, my good friend for more than 30 years, the well know new-realism artist Alberto Bass directed the museum excellently during the government period of that time. But, Alberto Bass was, from toward time, in the political party get the presidency in the nation durant the four years he was there.

Anyway, that it is part of our identity of the Dominican Republic. Anyone be there directing that office directing, it is necessary to support him or her in benefit of our national art.
